Central Anatolia Region

Central Anatolia Turkey: Another Turkish region is that of Central Anatolia which covers the central plateau of the country. Most of this plateau region is just steppe. The most famous point of this region is the Salt Lake or Tuz Golu which is located in the middle of the region. This lake is situated between Aksaray, Konya and Ankara. Moreover, this lake is the second biggest lake of the country falling short of Lake Van. However, it is just two meters deep. The most amazing sight for the lake can be viewed in the summer time when it completely evaporates and leaves a completely flat and white land reminiscent of salt desert.

These months are popular with tourists for salt harvesting or for walking around. During this time, this area is also used for bird watching as the birds migrating from Europe to the African countries pass through this region. Another popular place is the Karapmar desert situated 170 km in the southeast direction of Konya. After seeing a sand desert, the viewers can treat themselves to a look of a real desert. This also provides a relief from the yellowing landscapes of the steppe in the summer. The desert expansion was halted by starting forestation from the seventies.
